Is Our #1 Really #1?

Losing a loved one causes us to pause, reflect, and sometimes realign our lives. We determine that what we have been treating as most important (jobs, housework, and general busyness) is not as high on the list as other things. We quickly realize that what we value is people - family, friends, and coworkers. We do not get rid of the other things, but we realize that we do need to realign our priorities.

It is similar when thinking of our school district. When we stop to reflect, we can see that what often rises to the surface as our top priorities (budget, test scores, and extracurricular standings) may need to take second place to the reason we exist - our students, then staff and families. Do we need to realign?

We often look at the budget, test scores, and extracurricular standings because they are easier to measure. It is easier to compare ourselves against ourselves and with other districts when we can compare numbers. How can we assess how over 8,000 students are really doing?

Some companies perform annual satisfaction surveys alongside regular data collection measures. A local nursing home surveys the residents, families, and staff members to gain important information on the service each group receives. The results provide solid action items to focus on for the following year.

Providing this service for our students, staff, families, and community members would be beneficial in helping us identify our strengths and growth opportunities. Acting on these results will show that we value the opinions of our stakeholders. It will take this district to greater heights!
